President Biden offered condolences to President Erdogan.
A massive 7.8 earthquake that occurred along the Anatolia–Arabia geological plate lines, affecting both Turkey and Syria, has claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people, and the toll may be growing.
The quake is the strongest to hit the region in more than a century.
The governments of both countries have rescue teams working constantly in freezing weather conditions as more than 100 aftershocks have struck the area. Both governments have also established shelters for survivors, and officials say that humanitarian assistance has already been provided to more than 4 million people.
Neighboring countries, including Israel, have sent rescue and recovery teams, along with medical personnel and equipment.
President Biden spoke with Turkish President Erdogan earlier in the week to express condolences and offer help. The White House stated, “He reaffirmed the readiness of the United States to provide any and all needed assistance to our NATO Ally Turkey in response to this tragedy.”
Secretary of State Blinken said assistance is already underway.
